Where can I find statistics about migration?

Here you can find some sources of statistics about migration in the Czech Republic and in other countries. Further down the page, there are links to research projects on migration and integration and their outcomes.


Czech Statistical Office provides information about resident foreigners in the Czech Republic and every year it publishes a publication Foreigners in the Czech Republic which you can order for free.

Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic provides up-to-date monthly information about number of foreigners with a valid residence permit in the Czech Republic.

Eurostat collects and publishes statistical data from all the member states in a single database. The Eurostat publications are available in PDFs.

European Website on Integration provides information about integration of foreigners in the EU member states (it includes countries’ profiles) and about EU integration policy.

OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) also provides information about immigration in its member states – these are 34 in total and apart from the Czech Republic, they include for example Slovakia, Spain, Germany, USA, United Kingdom and Canada.

International Organisation for Migration (IOM) publishes reports about migration that are available for free in PDFs. IOM also takes part of a project creating migration profiles of different countries. The profiles are to be found HERE.

UNHCR (UN High Commissionaire for refugees) runs a database of numbers of refugees, asylum holders and also internally displaced people (IDPs).

MIPEX (Migrant Integration Policy Index) is an index evaluating integration policies of different states (but not every day practice). MIPEX website offers countries’ profiles and also a possibility to make your own graphs based on the data available. - visualisation of immigration and emigration data for all the countries.

United Nations Global Migration Database - you have to register to get access, but the registration is free of charge.

Research projects

Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS) was a longitudinal research project that was conducted between 1991 and 2006 and its goal was to evaluate level and ways of adaptation of second generation immigrants in the United States. The project website provides detailed description of the research, questionnaires and also outcome data (different file formats). Principal investigators were Alejandro Portés and Rubén G. Rumbaut whose articles are also among the most important ones based on the project.

TIES: The Integration of the European Second Generation was also project on research on second generation immigrants, but in eight European countries. The main outcome is a book called The European Second Generation Compared - Does the Integration Context Matter? (editors Maurice Crul, Jens Schneider and Frans Lelie). The New Immigrant Survey (NIS) was conducted between 2003 and 2009. The goal was to evaluate integration of immigrants in the United States in different fields, for example labour market, housing and health care system. The NIS website provides detailed description of the project, questionnaires and the outcome data. It also includes list of articles based on this research project.

Project CLANDESTINO (Undocumented Migration: Counting the Uncountable Data and Trends Across Europe) was conducted in 2007-2009 and the goal was to collect data about irregular migration in the European Union and try to develop better methods of estimating numbers of undocumented migrants. Project was conducted in 12 countries, Czech Republic included. One of the project outcomes is a database that provides information about the twelve countries.
